In automotive engineering, the master cylinder, also known as the master brake cylinder, converts the non-hydraulic pressure on the brake pedal to hydraulic pressure by feeding brake fluid into the brake circuit and controlling this according to the mechanical force. This device controls slave cylinders located at the other end of the hydraulic system. Master brake cylinders are used both in disc brakes and drum brakes. Over time, with constant use, the seals inside of the cylinder can wear out and form internal leaks. A bad brake master cylinder may result in a pedal that feels mushy, spongy, or that slowly sinks to the floor when depressed.
